January is well on its way, so there has been enough time for setting resolutions unless perhaps you are still wondering how to fit things in. Whatever the weight you give to New Year resolutions, a new year does invite reflection. Reflection on both the old and new year. Underlying resolutions is often a desire for change in some form or another.

Get off the fast train life puts you on for a moment and take time to contemplate where you are right now before deciding what direction you want to take. Make it a conscious choice – both to get off the train and choosing the next train to get on again. Get clarity on the direction you want to set your compass for 2018.

Write down what you would love 2018 to be like – what you would like to achieve, personally and professionally, both at the level of Do-ing and Be-ing. What are the top 5 things you would like to achieve this year? Where do you need to up your game? What would you like to learn this year? What talents and strengths would you like to develop? What do you want more of, and less of? What impact do you want to make in the world in 2018?

If 2018 is a year you want to look back on as a game changer, what do you need to put in place now?

To give greater meaning and impact to your answers write them down as suggested or if you prefer, make a vision board, which is also a fun and relaxing way to consolidate your thoughts and feelings.

The key to success in realising your goals is to take that vision one step further. You need to do what is called backward planning – you need to know what your steps are to get where you want to get. Here are some questions to help you:

What is your commitment? How are you going to make it real? What is your immediate next step? What are the steps in 3, 6 and 9 months? How are you going to celebrate reaching your goals? Who or what can help you?
