A New Year, New Possibilities, New Dreams, New Hopes, New, New…
We are all too eager to move on in the upcoming year. Taking a look ahead, we draft new (even longer) lists of goals and accomplishments.
Looking back at the year gone by, our thoughts go to the things we have done to which we easily add ‘but’.
“I started to look for a new job, but I am still stuck in the same job.”
“I wanted to join a choir, but never signed up.”
“I spent time with the family but could have been more.”
We focus on the doing and on what is not there (enough). Sounds familiar?
Get Grounded in Your Values
Here is an invitation to link your Do-ing to your Be-ing for 2022 and 2023.
Go through your 2022 calendar week by week. Note down any important event, family gathering, friendly get-together, trip, significant project (whether it went well or not!).
Next, consider each of these happenings and identify the value you honored through the event.
Values which came up for me were: connection, fun, growth and learning, courage, experimentation, determination, self-care.
Once you have your list of values, ask yourself:
- Which values did you live up to the most?
- Are those values your top ones?
- Which ones didn’t you live up to much?
And from here, think of which values you want to honour in 2023 and how. And importantly, take action now. You can also create a system to remind you of your values and actions.
I was pleasantly surprised by how often the same values actually came up. In 2022, I made conscious choices in alignment with who I am and aspire to be. It feels good. More in 2023!
Why Are Values important?
Values are like signposts, bringing you closer to your True North, that place of deep meaningful connection where you play your game in full alignment with yourself.
Your do-ing should reflect your values, your longings, and the way you want to live. That’s who you are.
Year after year, month after month, day after day, we learn about ourselves, we grow a little, like a tree that grows roots as it reaches for the sky.
Branches are visible to others – they are like achievements. Strong roots come from our being. If you cut a branch, another will grow. It’s another story when you touch the roots.
It is essential to nourish our roots, our needs for being and feeling. Living up to your values helps you do just that.
